In 2003, Rockstar was a relatively new player in the energy drink category and was looking to promote its brand. Rockstar wanted to launch a sampling program to its predominantly male 18-34 audience, but did not have the budget for sampling programs in cities all over the country. At the same time, players from the Boston Baseball League's Boston United were looking for a way to offset tournament costs at the upcoming MSBL World Series. The MSBL World Series consisted of 325 teams in 2003 of players from all over the United States -- the bulk of which fell directly into Rockstar's target audience. Further, once competing players returned to their respective cities, word-of-mouth regarding any promotion would spread to more than 44,000 teammates. The MSBL World Series is the largest amateur adult baseball tournament in the world. Charity Hop proposed a promotion where Rockstar, the Boston United and Tourney Directors for the MSBL World Series would all benefit. Once approved, Charity Hop founders arranged every detail. Rockstar delivered 325 cases of energy drink to Tempe Diablo stadium in Phoenix. Each team manager was given a 24-can case for them to distribute to each player on their team. The MSBL Tourney Directors saved more than $15,000, as they typically had to give away "goody bags" of product that came out of their own budget. In return for brokering the deal, the Boston United had their tourney fees waived. The United changed their name to the Boston Rockstars, and had plenty of energy, going 4-1-1 overall in the tournament. By 2005, Rockstar had a #3 market share of 16.8%, behind only Monster at 22.3% and Red Bull with 37.4% market share. Before the event, Rockstar Energy Drink was a relatively unknown beverage.
